A couple of years ago, I was riding a new high as a doula. I had figured out how to be in network for TriCare (military insurance) as well as FL medicaid plans. I landed a position teaching childbirth education at Gentle Birth Center in Royal Palm Beach. I was busy and loving it.
Then, the unthinkable happened. I had a psychotic break. I will spare you the details, but in short, I learned I needed consistent sleep, regular therapy and less stress.
I took a break, thinking I was hammering the lid on the coffin of my doula career. I grieved. I got a lot of treatment and therapy. And then I decided to look into working again in some new-to-me field. Nothing I found was the right fit.
After some prayer, and recognizing my credentials CD(DONA) and CBS (doula and certified breastfeeding specialist) were still good, I decided I could still help families without losing my wits. I won’t be returning to attending births anytime soon, if ever, now that I have a medical need for consistent sleep. However, I can help families prepare for birth, recover from birth, and have successful breastfeeding journeys.
It is with joyful anticipation that I re-enter the workforce in this role. I look forward to helping moms throughout their breastfeeding journey, from education prenatally, to early latching, and all the way to weaning.
